How to Save Money While Shopping Online
Shopping online has become second nature for many of us, not only does it offer the convenience of delivery straight to your door, and browsing from the comfort of your sofa but there is access to a world of products at just a click of a button.
However, overspending can creep in if you’re not careful. With the right tips and tricks, you can save money while still getting everything you need. Here’s how:
1. Use Price Comparison Websites
Before clicking “buy now,” take a moment to check if you’re getting the best deal. Websites such as PriceSpy, Idealo and Google Shopping can help you to compare prices across multiple retailers, allowing you to get the best price possible.
2. Look for Discount Codes
Never check out without searching for a discount code! Websites like VoucherCodes, HotDealsUK and Groupon can help you find active promo codes for your favourite retailers. Many stores also offer discounts if you sign up for their newsletters.

3. Time Your Purchases
Sales events like Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and post-Christmas sales are great opportunities to save big. While many shops have seasonal sales, so plan your purchases around these times for maximum savings.
4. Take Advantage of Cashback Websites
Cashback websites like TopCashback and Quidco reward you for shopping through their links, by giving you a small about back. Over time, this cashback can add up and help you out when you need it.
5. Download Shops App
Some shops offer app-exclusive discounts or early access to sales. So for your favourite stores, it is worth downloading the app to help keep you in the loop for deals you might otherwise miss. For instance, this year’s Lush sale was much better on the app compared to the website.
6. Abandon Your Shopping Basket
If you have the time to wait then a little patience can pay off. If you add items to your basket but don’t complete the purchase, some retailers will email you a discount code to entice you back. Just make sure you’re logged into your account!
7. Buy in Bulk
For essentials and everyday items, buying in bulk can save you money. Websites like Amazon and Costco often offer discounts for multi-pack purchases. Just ensure you’ll use the items before they expire!

8. Sign Up for Loyalty Programmes
Many retailers reward loyal customers with points, exclusive discounts, and early access to sales. Programmes such as Boots Advantage, Tesco Clubcard, or Superdrug Health & Beautycard can help you rack up savings over time.
9. Check for Free Delivery
Shipping fees can quickly add up, so always look for free delivery options. Many retailers offer free delivery when you spend a certain amount or sign up for their membership programmes, like ASOS Premier or Amazon Prime. However, always make sure you aren’t spending more just to get free shipping.
10. Use Browser Extensions
Extensions such as CamelCamelCamel and hotukdeals (previously Pouch) can help you track price drops, find coupons, and alert you to better deals while you shop. Taking away the hard work for you, so you can shop smarter.
11. Shop Second-Hand or Refurbished
Websites such as eBay, Vinted, and Facebook Marketplace are treasure troves for second-hand deals. While if you’re shopping for electronics, check out certified refurbished items on sites like Apple or Currys for significant savings.
There are even websites where you can sell formula; these specialist websites not only help people buy formula for less than it often costs in store, but also help to reduce waste.
12. Avoid Impulse Buys
It can be easy to get carried away when shopping online, especially with flash sales and limited-time offers. Create a wishlist and stick to it. If possible, waiting 24 hours before making a purchase can also help curb impulse buying.

13. Opt for Click-and-Collect
Save on delivery fees by choosing click-and-collect where possible. Many stores offer this service for free, while it can also be cheaper to get items delivered to a local store than your home and it’s a great way to avoid the dreaded “sorry we missed you” delivery slip.
14. Subscribe and Save
For items you buy regularly, such as toiletries or pet food, consider subscription services. Retailers like Amazon offer discounts for repeat deliveries, saving you money in the long run. However remember to check prices from time to time, I recently found I was paying more for a product as I was getting delivered an older packaging.
15. Read Reviews Before Buying
Cheap isn’t always cheerful. Make sure you’re getting good value for money by reading reviews before committing to a purchase. This can save you from buying poor-quality products that you’ll need to replace.
Shopping online doesn’t have to break the bank and hopefully, these tips can help you enjoy the convenience of online shopping while keeping your bank happy. Remember, a little effort before you hit “checkout” can lead to big savings!
