The Top 5 Trading Card Games to Play in 2026

Trading card games are having a bit of a moment right now.

Actually, scratch that. They’ve been having a moment for years, and somehow they just keep getting bigger. Pokémon, I’m definitely looking at you.

No matter if you are a long-time collector, someone who enjoys cracking open a booster pack now and then, or you’re looking for a new hobby that doesn’t involve staring at a screen all evening, there’s a trading card game out there for you.

The tricky part is deciding where to start.

With everything from Pokémon and Magic: The Gathering to newer games such as Disney Lorcana, there are more choices than ever. Some games are great for collectors, some are built around competitive play, and others sit somewhere in the middle.

So, if you’re wondering which trading card game deserves your time (and probably a good portion of your wallet), here are my picks for the best TCGs to play in 2026.

1. Pokémon Trading Card Game

A Pokémon trading card featuring Dragonite in a protective case, placed on a cracked white surface. The card is titled Special Delivery Dragonite and shows a cartoon dragon with a postbag flying in the sky.

Let’s be honest, you knew Pokémon was going to be on this list.

It doesn’t matter if you’ve been collecting since the days of Base Set Charizard or you’ve only recently discovered the hobby through the latest sets; Pokémon remains one of the biggest names in trading cards.

Part of the appeal is that it works on so many levels. Some people never actually play the game and simply enjoy collecting their favourite Pokémon, others love building decks and competing, while many do a bit of both.

The artwork keeps getting better (keep a look out for claymations and knitted!), the community remains huge, and it’s one of the easiest games for new players to learn.

If someone asked me for a first trading card game recommendation, Pokémon would still be near the top of the list.

Why I Think It’s Worth Playing

  • Easy to learn
  • Great for collectors
  • Huge player base
  • New sets arrive regularly

Just be aware that at the moment it is harder to get than it has previously been, but many stores are putting invite systems in place to help more products get into collectors’ hands.

2. Magic: The Gathering

A foil Magic: The Gathering card named Stiltzkin, Moogle Merchant lies on a white, cracked surface. The card features three moogle characters and has shiny, reflective artwork.

Magic isn’t just a trading card game; it’s practically a hobby within a hobby.

If you enjoy strategy, deck building, and discovering clever card combinations, Magic: The Gathering can keep you busy for years.

It can feel a little intimidating when you’re starting out because there are so many cards and formats, but don’t let that put you off. Once it clicks, it’s easy to see why so many players stick with it for decades.

There’s also a format for almost every type of player, whether you enjoy casual games with friends or more competitive play.

Why I Think It’s Worth Playing

  • Incredible strategic depth
  • Huge variety of ways to play
  • Strong local communities
  • New sets throughout the year
  • You’ll never run out of decks to build

3. One Piece Card Game

If someone had told me a few years ago that One Piece would become one of the biggest trading card games around, I might have raised an eyebrow.

Yet here we are.

The One Piece Card Game has built a passionate fanbase incredibly quickly, and it’s easy to see why. The cards look fantastic, the gameplay is genuinely fun, and the game continues to attract both collectors and competitive players.

Even if you’ve never watched a single episode of the anime, it’s worth taking a look at.

Why I Think It’s Worth Playing

  • Fantastic artwork
  • Growing community
  • Strong competitive scene
  • Fun gameplay mechanics
  • Great for anime fans

4. Disney Lorcana

A graded trading card featuring Winnie the Pooh as Hunny Wizard is encased in clear plastic, labelled with a Gem Mint 10 rating. The card shows Pooh surrounded by honey and glowing light on a marble surface.

I think a lot of people expected Disney Lorcana to be successful, however I’m not sure anyone expected it to be quite this successful.

Lorcana has managed to bring a whole new audience into trading card games. Disney fans who may never have touched a TCG before are suddenly discussing deck strategies and hunting down cards.

It helps that the game itself is genuinely enjoyable to play.

The Disney theme gets people through the door, but the gameplay is what keeps many of them around. And yes, Sarah collects the Winnie the Pooh cards.

Why I Think It’s Worth Playing

  • Beautiful card designs
  • Disney characters everyone knows
  • Beginner-friendly
  • Family-friendly
  • Easy to get into

5. Digimon Card Game

A Digimon trading card featuring Alphamon: Ouryuken is placed on a white, cracked marble surface. The card displays vibrant artwork, stats, and abilities, with red, gold, and black colours dominating the design.

The Digimon Card Game has quietly built a loyal following since its launch, and it’s easy to see why. It strikes a nice balance between accessible gameplay and deeper strategy, making it enjoyable no matter if you are just starting out or looking for something more competitive.

Fans of the Digimon series will love seeing familiar characters brought to life with beautiful artwork, but you don’t need to have grown up watching the anime to appreciate what the game has to offer. They are a TCG that offers regular new releases and an active community.

Why I Think It’s Worth Playing

  • Strategic without feeling overwhelming
  • Fantastic artwork
  • Strong and welcoming community
  • Regular new sets and support
  • Great for both collectors and players

Final Thoughts

The best trading card game is the one that makes you excited to open the next pack.

For some people, that’ll always be Pokémon; others will fall headfirst into Magic, Lorcana, One Piece, or something else entirely.

The good news is that there’s never been a better time to be a TCG fan.

Just don’t blame me when your “I’ll just buy one pack” turns into another shelf full of binders.
