Games You Can Play on Your Own (And Actually Enjoy)

No matter if you are flying solo by choice or just fancy a bit of quiet fun, solo games can be the perfect way to unwind, challenge your brain, or just pass the time without relying on anyone else.

And as someone who enjoys playing games alone, I’ve put together some games that are perfect for solo play, and you might really enjoy them.

Cosy Switch Games for One

Person wearing a cream jumper plays a game on a handheld console with blue and red controllers whilst sitting on a beige sofa. The game displayed shows a character in a colourful village setting.

The Nintendo Switch has a huge range of single-player gems. Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Stardew Valley, Spiritfarer, and Unpacking are all feel-good, low-stress games that let you play at your own pace.

Crosswords, Sudoku & Word Puzzles

Old school? Maybe. Satisfying? Absolutely. From those included in newspapers and magazines to having apps like NYT Games or Good Sudoku at your fingertips, it’s a great way to give your brain a little stretch.

Solo Board Games (Yes, Really)

You’d be surprised how many board games also offer a solo play option now! Favourites such as Wingspan, Terraforming Mars: Ares Expedition, or Cascadia have all come up with gameplay for one player, and they can be relaxing, strategic, and fun.

Cosy Clicker or Idle Games

For something super low-effort, clicker or idle games like Cats & Soup, Neko Atsume, or Egg, Inc. all of which offer a bit of serotonin without needing much from you in return.

Jigsaw Puzzles

Two drinks, one with a slice of lemon and the other creamy, sit on a table scattered with puzzle pieces. A person in a light jumper is working on the puzzle in the background.

There’s something relaxing about watching a picture slowly come together. No matter if you choose to do yours with physical pieces or a digital version (try Magic Jigsaw Puzzles), it’s peak calm vibes.

Story-Based RPGs

Love a rich narrative and strong characters? Dive into single-player immersive games, Undertale, Firewatch, The Witcher 3, or Night in the Woods. They offer wonderful worlds to explore and zero small talk.

Solo Card Games

It’s not all about Solitaire (though let’s be honest, it’s a classic). Try Friday: A Solo Adventure, Onirim, or The Game, all made with solo players in mind.

Logic & Brain Teasers

Into a challenge? Pick up games like The Room, Monument Valley, or The Witness. These puzzle games are beautiful, atmospheric, and built for deep solo thinking.

Mobile Games That Don’t Suck

Games like Alto’s Odyssey, Mini Metro, Florence, or My Oasis are lovely little escapes you can carry in your pocket. No ads every 3 seconds? Yes please.

Make Up Your Own Game

A person in a mustard jumper plays with toy dinosaurs in a tray of sand on a table, surrounded by coloured pencils, toy pieces, and a small wooden house.

Create a silly quest. Compete with yourself. Build something in Minecraft. Pretend your dog is a dragon, whom you must protect at all costs.. No one’s watching, it’s just you and your imagination.

Final Thoughts

Solo play isn’t sad; it can be a mix of self-care, creativity, and calm rolled into one. From gaming in bed, curled up on the sofa, or hiding in the loo for five minutes of peace, you deserve fun that fits your mood. Game on, legend.

What’s your favourite solo game?
