Cosy Things to Do When the Weather is Awful

There are some days when you look out of the window and immediately decide you’re not going anywhere.

The rain is coming down sideways, the wind is doing questionable things to the bins, or everything just looks grey, cold and thoroughly uninviting.

Of course, sometimes you still have to go out. But when you don’t? I think there’s something quite nice about being tucked up indoors while the weather does its worst outside.

So, next time the weather is particularly miserable, I say embrace it.

Make Things Cosy

A lit candle, pumpkin, autumn leaves, pine cones, cinnamon sticks, and berries are arranged on a cosy knitted jumper and soft fabric, creating a warm autumn scene.

For me, blankets are one of the best things about the weather getting cooler. I miss them during summer, so as soon as I can comfortably get one back out, I will.

Add comfortable clothes, a cup of tea and perhaps a candle, and things are already looking better.

You don’t need to completely transform your home, either. Sometimes just turning on a lamp instead of the big light and finding somewhere comfortable to settle down is enough.

Plus, there’s something quite satisfying about listening to the rain when you know you don’t have to be out in it.

Find Something to Get Lost In

A clear cassette tape is placed above two black musical notes on a pink textured background, making the tape appear as part of the notes.

Bad weather is a good excuse to get lost in something for a few hours.

For me, that’s often an audiobook, but it could be a book, podcast, film, TV series or even an entire album you’ve not listened to in ages.

I’m also very much in favour of returning to old favourites. There are times when I want something new, but there are also days when I don’t want to learn the names and backstories of 14 different characters. Give me something I already know I like.

Do Something With Your Hands

A close-up of coloured pencils arranged in a tight circle with their sharpened tips pointing inward, showcasing a vibrant spectrum of colours.

If you don’t fancy spending the whole day watching TV, this can also be a good time to dig out something you haven’t done for a while.

You could work on a jigsaw, try some colouring, do a bit of crafting or sort through a collection.

It doesn’t have to be productive. In fact, I think that’s quite important.

There’s a big difference between sorting through something because you’re enjoying yourself and deciding that a rainy afternoon means you should finally reorganise the entire house.

Pick the fun one.

Comfort Food Helps

A slice of toasted bread topped with baked beans and a basil leaf on a white plate, with a blurred bowl of grated cheese in the background.

Is there anything better than something warm to eat when it’s horrible outside?

It could be soup with some nice bread, a big bowl of pasta, something you’ve had bubbling away in the slow cooker or a bit of baking if that’s your thing.

You could finally try one of those recipes you’ve saved and completely forgotten about.

Or you could have beans on toast.

Cosiness shouldn’t require three hours in the kitchen and seventeen ingredients you don’t own.

Make a Day of Staying In

Sometimes it’s nice to actually decide you’re having an indoor day rather than feeling like the weather has trapped you there.

Get the snacks out and have a film afternoon. Play a board game. Start a new audiobook. Work on a jigsaw. Spend far too long browsing something you collect online.

Or, of course, you could lose a few hours to a game. There are definitely worse ways to wait for the rain to stop.

Whatever sounds good to you.

You don’t need to fill every hour with an activity, either. Make another cup of tea, get back under the blanket and watch the rain for a bit.

The world will cope.

When You’ve Got No Energy

Of course, sometimes the weather is miserable and you don’t have much energy to do anything with the day anyway.

Put on an audiobook and close your eyes. Watch something you’ve seen before. Sit with a pet if you have one. Have a nap. Get under a blanket and do absolutely nothing for a while.

Not every day at home needs to become an opportunity to start a hobby, bake something from scratch or finally complete a project.

Sometimes a duvet day really can just be a duvet day.

Embrace the Awful Weather

British weather is going to do what British weather does, and we’re probably never going to stop complaining about it.

But every now and then, I quite like a properly miserable day when I can stay safely tucked up indoors.

If the weather insists on being awful, I say let it. I’m staying inside.
