These Are My Top 5 RPGs for Hours of Fun
Now I will admit, these change every so often, and these are just the top 5 I could think of right now, and they’re all games I have played more than once, most on more than one console and put a lot of hours into. So I wouldn’t change this list currently.
The Legend Of Heroes: Trails Of Cold Steel:

This was my introduction to the series and why I fell in love with it, the characters, the stories and locations. It’s consistently one of my favourite games of all time. I also heard someone explain it well: “by playing this one first, you see the previous characters through the eyes of the current characters, and it gives you a different perspective.” And yes, I am slowly replaying the older games for more context now. It’s a long series now but it’s so worth playing, no matter where you end up starting from (I would at least try and start from the beginning of a set of the games though).
Persona 5:

My favourite Persona game hands down, I love the characters, the colour schemes, the story and how it jabs at modern day issues. It’s not quite as physically dark as P3 and P4, but it’s still there psychologically. I have played the PS4 version, the PS5 version, and beaten it on Steam. Beaten Royal (which is the better version of the game, even if they removed the reaper flu exploit). So yeah, I really enjoy this game. If you like colourful turn-based RPGs, this is a must-try. Just know it has some very dark themes that aren’t for everyone.
Dragon Quest Builders 2:

The game itself is fun and enjoyable, definitely better than 1, where they had breakable equipment. But the real fun for me comes from the post-game building, having your own little (or large) islands to transform into whatever you want. Will you build your own little town? Maybe a monster village? Maybe an underground dungeon? I’ve built several different ideas myself, both solo and with friends. I’m eagerly awaiting a third game (I’m hopeful for one anyway.)
Dragon Ball Z Kakarot:

I know people love the Budokai series and quite like Sparkling Zero, but this is my all-time favourite Dragon Ball series game. A really great retelling of the Z story, smooth battles, lots of fun and quirky side quests. The community medals and buffs, including food, were all good additions. Even the early DLCs were very good. This game is what the Fairy Tail RPGs should have been; this is what we should have gotten for Bleach instead of the arena fighter we got. This game, in my opinion, is the standard anime-based game should be held too. Another note, this is the game I chose to be the first game I played when I started re-doing some of my favourite RPGs after I got my Steam Deck, and I absolutely loved the experience there.
Ni No Kuni 2:
This one holds a bit of sentimental value for me, I was hospitalised when it came out, and Sarah got me the collector’s edition as a present for when I got out (which I still have). I will say, I don’t think it’s quite as pretty as the original with Studio Ghibli no longer being involved, but it is a really fun game. It has a great story, great characters and lots of fun little side stuff to do. I even quite enjoy the base-building aspect and how they weave that into side quests and collecting new citizens for your kingdom.
5 Honourable Mentions:
These are all games I have played and really enjoyed, but didn’t quite make the cut for the top 5. They’re all games that have also made some kind of social impact, so I thought they were good, honourable mentions.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33:

This game has been a viral phenomenon lately, and I can see why. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with the game and while I did use a Maelle build for Simon, I can say I thoroughly enjoyed the dodge and parry mechanics, even though I usually do prefer traditionally turn-based RPGs. Esquie really grew on me throughout the story as well. I wasn’t too keen at first, but I think they perfectly balanced his comic relief with a pretty dark story without overdoing his additions too much. So far, I’d still personally have this as my game of the year, but we still have plenty of the year to go and more games to come.
Elden Ring:
Now I’m not big on the whole soulslike genre (although I have played some Bloodborne and Sekiro), but I got really into Elden Ring. I’ve played through multiple endings, some of them more than once. Struggled through a fight or two with the fire giant before getting that one down, never had the patience in me to try Malenia though. And yes, I was slinging a lot of rockets and some comets for my main play-throughs.
Split Fiction:
Now I played this with a friend and we had an absolute blast, enough so that we looked into the previous games by the same studio. It has some sections my eyes didn’t quite like with constantly flipping perspectives, but the game is beautifully done and so smooth to play. If you want a co-op game with a mixture of fantasy and sci-fi elements? This is it. It is definitely my co-op game of the year.
Marvel’s Spiderman:
This is another game I’ve played multiple times now. PS4, PS5 and then Steam Deck. All slightly different experiences and all very fun. PS4 was my favourite, first time playing and really enjoyable, I also managed to get away with no bugs. My next two runs were a little more buggy than the last, but still a really fun time. I loved the story; it had great emotional weight to it and a really nice selection of villains. If you like Spiderman or just RPGs, definitely give it a shot (Spiderman 2 is also a really great game worth having a go at.)
Skyrim Anniversary Edition:
I chose this edition specifically because I really enjoy the additions this one makes. Lots of creative content has been added to the game, and while all of it is pretty fun, my favourite addition is a very small but fun one. Backpacks. You can find one as early as the tutorial dungeon, and the +75 carry weight? A godsend that early on. It makes exploiting the Dawn Star hidden chest much faster to get the Enchanting, Alchemy and Smithing loop started faster and easier. Which I tend to do early on most times I play. If you ever get Skyrim, get this version. If you have it but not the upgrade? It’s worth it in my opinion.
What is your favourite RPG game?
