The Ultimate Fandom Journalling Starter Kit (That Doesn’t Feel Like Homework)

You know that moment when you get a notebook and your brain decides it’s now a sacred artefact and must never be written in? Welcome to the club!

The good news journalling doesn’t need to be a serious or a perfectly curated craft project. Instead it can be messy, quick, and fun. The kind of thing you can do quickly while sitting on the sofa with your favourite film on TV and a cuppa in your other hand.

What you actually need to start

A spiral notebook with lined pages lies open on an orange surface. A pink pen rests on top. Colourful paper scraps, rubbers, and decorative stickers surround the notebook.

The bare minimum

  • A notebook
  • One pen you like using
  • A place to keep it (sofa side table, bedside, your favourite chair)

That’s it, you are ready to go!

Nice-but-not-needed extras

  • A highlighter (for titles or fave quotes)
  • Washi tape/stickers
  • A pencil case for pens, sticky notes, etc.

If you’ve already got supplies, great. If not, please don’t feel like you need to buy anything just to begin, extras aren’t a necessity, just an if you want.

The secret trick: the first page permission slip

The easiest way to stop a notebook from feeling too much like a no-write zone is to give yourself permission to be imperfect right from page one.

Try one of these:

  • Write: This notebook is allowed to be messy.
  • Stick one sticker on the first page (wonky placement definitely encouraged)
  • Draw a tiny doodle (even if it looks like a potato)
  • Scribble on a corner

Once that first line is drawn, it’s so much easier to keep going.

Pick your vibe: 3 easy fandom journalling styles

You can mix these up to suit your own style.

1) The Collector

Great if you love lists, rankings, and tracking things.

  • Watch/read/play lists
  • Top 10 characters lists
  • Merchandise wish lists
  • Card collection lists (already owned or needed)

2) The Storyteller

Perfect if you love quotes, lore, or overthinking plot points.

  • Favourite scenes
  • Character notes
  • Mini reviews and reactions

3) The Comfort-Seeker

For those who want an easy to go back to package.

  • Comfort rewatches/reads
  • Bad day menus to help you feel better
  • Gentle reads for calming your mind
  • Favourite quotes

Easy pages you’ll enjoy creating

Four colourful sticky notes (blue, pink, yellow, and purple) are attached to a green textured surface with clips and a drawing pin. Below them are three rolls of decorative washi tape and scattered star- and flower-shaped confetti.

Here are some simple page ideas which you might find fun to put together.

Fandom basics

  • Favourites page: Top characters, episodes, games, ships, villains
  • Quote vault: Funny lines, comfort lines, or those I need this on a mug lines
  • Watch/Read/Play log: Title + date + quick rating (stars, hearts, would rewatch when sad, happy etc..)
  • Wish list page: Merchandise, special editions and future releases

Creative + fun

  • Headcanon corner: What do you think might happen, “what if…” thoughts and silly theories
  • “If I lived in this universe…” page: What would you do? What’s your job, what do you wear, who are you close with?
  • Character vibes list: Who’s the one causing chaos? Who’s the one who has everything prepared? Who do you resonate with?
  • Doodle pages: Symbols, ships, badges, icons, anything that comes to mind (stick figures welcome)

Cosy life crossover

  • Comfort menu: What to watch/read/play when you don’t feel your best
  • Bad day reboot list: 10 tiny resets (tea, shower, fresh PJs, 5-min tidy… anything that gives you a small pick me up)
  • Tiny wins page: Because we’ll all deserve to remember the tiny wins even if it’s just I got dressed today.

Low-pressure prompts

Stuck on what to write about? Here are a few prompts that might give you some ideas on what to answer next.

  • Which scene lives in your head rent-free?
  • Which character would sleep with a teddy bear?
  • What’s your personal comfort rewatch or read, and why?
  • If you could change one thing in a story, what would it be?
  • What would your “starter pack” be in X universe?
  • Which character would you trust to plan a road trip, and which would get you banned from a service station?

Make it a habit without turning it into a chore

Colourful stationery items including pens, markers, sticky notes, heart-shaped notepad, washi tape, and decorative stickers are arranged on a pastel-coloured surface.

It’s not about writing daily, we don’t do streaks or worrying because you forgot yesterday, no pressure around here.

Instead try:

  • Once a week: a quick “what I watched/read/played” update
  • Two-minute rule: one line counts, even if it’s I’m tired, but I loved this scene
  • Keep it visible: if it lives in a drawer, it will simply be forgotten if your anything like me

One last nudge

Your notebook doesn’t need to be perfect. It’s allowed to be full of scribbles, chaotic, half-finished, and full of nonsense because the whole point is that it’s yours.

So go on, grab a pen and make that first mark!

  1. I don’t really jornal but my daughter does. I write a lot of lists. I am very forgetful and anxious so I write everything down that I need to do. I also like numbers so I write a lot of financial stuff down.

  2. I used to journal as a teenager and honestly I find it too difficult to read them back. I’m one of these people that remembers every single detail, so it’s very vivid reading them back. If I did journal again, I’d put a positive angle on it – such as only journaling the good things!

  3. I don’t journal every day, as I find this a bit too stressful, which defeats the purpose. However I have found for me every fortnight I do a little journal about stuff I’ve got done, gratitude, things I’m looking forward to, and budgeting really help my mindset and focus.

  4. I have tried many a time to start a journal, but I get distracted from it so quickly, may be because of my AuDHD, I would love to have another go, especially since I am about to change jobs, and it would be great to track my progress.

  5. I have special time dedicated to Journaling, I’ve always had a diary from as far back as I can remember and my Journaling was a natural progression from that. I am building up a selection of stickers, diamontes, labels, paper clips, pencil case full of gorgeous pens and stationery. I find it so peaceful and love looking back at a finished page. Thank you.
